Management of radioactive waste

It is difficult to find the activity of human being, during which the waste is not generated. Without any exception are the fields of activities, where the radioactive materials and radioactive sources are used. Largest amounts of radioactive waste are produced in operation of Ignalina nuclear power plant. A large amount of it will be produced in future when decommissioning will begin. Radioactive waste is also generated by small waste producers – all radioactive waste producers, except nuclear facilities*, that means, during the use of radioactive sources in industry, medicine, research and education.

In accordance with provisions of the Law on Radiation Protection, the Law on Management of Radioactive Waste and other laws and legal acts, the Radiation Protection Centre has the following functions:

  • establishes requirements for management of radioactive waste generated by small waste producers and supervises the compliance with them;
  • according to the order prescribed by the Government, it issues the licenses to manage radioactive waste;
  • takes part in licensing of radioactive waste management and disposal facilities;
  • exercises the radiation protection supervision and control of the radioactive waste management in nuclear facilities.

* nuclear power plant, storage facilities of nuclear and radioactive material, treatment facilities and facilities for final disposal of radioactive waste – repositories
