Research
Measurements of different factors related with ionizing radiation are one of the most important elements of radiation protection which helps to determine if radiation protection measures are needed and assess the efficiency of measures implemented. The measurements are a part of radiation protection research.

The system of research is created in the Radiation Protection Centre. It meets Lithuanian needs, i.e., when it was created such circumstances as types of available practices, pathways and magnitudes of exposure, legal requirements, potential problems in radiation protection. Experience and resources available in other institutions, availability of professionals in the Radiation Protection Centre, necessity of measurements in case of nuclear and radiological accident were also taken into account.

The following research and investigations are performed at the Radiation Protection Centre recently:
  • personal dose equivalents,
  • activities of radionuclides in human body by whole body counter and bioassay,
  • ambient dose equivalents,
  • patients’ doses (entrance surface doses) in diagnostic radiology,
  • dose area products,
  • computed tomography dose indexes,
  • gamma spectrometric (in various samples),
  • activities of Sr90/Y90 (in various samples),
  • activities of H3 (in various samples),
  • gross alpha and beta activities (in various samples),
  • concentrations of radon indoors, in soil and water,
  • parameters of x-ray machines important for image quality and doses to patients,
  • illumination of viewing boxes and quality control of film development process,
  • radionuclide content of radioactive materials of unknown origin,
  • enrichment of nuclear fuel,
  • dose rate and radioactive contamination.

Much attention is paid to quality assurance. The Department of Programs and Expertise of the Radiation Protection Centre is accredited for tests according to the standard EN ISO/IEC 17025, and the Radiation Protection Centre is attested to carry out investigations of risk factors related with dose rate of ionising radiation and radioactive contamination.

Results of research and investigations are used in scientific publications and presentations, preparation of drafts of legal documents and guides in radiation protection.

The results of research and investigations, if necessary, are used for assessment of exposure and identification of radiation protection measures, if it is needed.
