Project expertise
In order to properly protect people from the sources of ionizing radiation used during different activities, radiation protection means should be indicated on the projecting stage of the premises, where those sources will be used. The requirements for such premises are listed in the Lithuanian hygienic standards which regulate radiation protection for related activities. They are requirements for the classification of premises, physical protection, radiation monitoring installations, warning signs and so on.

The most important requirement is related to the thickness of constructive elements which protect people from the penetration of ionizing radiation. When calculating the thickness, the characteristic of the sources in the premise should be regarded to because they determine the dose power of the ionizing radiation source, the size of the premise, the purpose of the premise and areas around the projected premise, occupation time and etc.

Protective thickness of premises for different kind of practical activity is calculated according to the general principles of protection from ionizing radiation. This calculation is not simple and it should be carried out by the professionals who are qualified in radiation and well informed about the specifics of activities in the projected premises.

Radiation Protection Centre performs an expertise of the projects in regard of radiation safety. For that reason the presented calculations are recalculated in order to evaluate their validity and correctness.

The following expertise are performed by the Radiation Protection Centre on the basis of results of measurements, performed by the centre or other laboratories:
  • acceptability of working conditions from the point of view of radiation protection,
  • suitability of foodstuff, their raw materials, construction materials from the point of view of radionuclide content in these materials,
  • expertise of premises, where sources of ionizing radiation are used, from the point of view of radiation protection,
  • expertise of conditions of exposure of workers, members of public and patients,
  • compliance of equipment and other objects with requirements of radiation protection.

The fact that the Department of Expertise, Department of Radiological Investigations and Department of Individual Dosimetry of the Radiation Protection Centre are accredited for tests according to the standard EN ISO/IEC 17025, and the Radiation Protection Centre is attested to carry out investigations of risk factors related with dose rate of ionising radiation and radioactive contamination.

The Radiation Protection Centre may also provide information about measuring devices, used for measurements of ionizing radiation, estimate type of measuring device, teach how to use these devices.
