Radiation Protection Centre participating in an international exercise EDREX 2017

     On the March 14–16, 2017 Radiation Protection Centre (RSC), at the invitation of Fire and Rescue Department (FRD), is participating in an international tabletop exercise EDREX (European Disaster Response Exercise) 2017, organized by European Union (EU) with Sweden, Italy and the United Kingdom consortium. The purpose of this exercise is to explore, further develop and to assess the EU’s combined crisis response capabilities at the national, EU and international level.

     According to the exercise scenario, on the March 13, 2017 in a country, that shares border with Lithuania and other member states of EU, a strong magnitude earthquake occurred. Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is located about 50 km from earthquake epicentre. EU member states begin to respond to the emergency situation.

     On the 14 March 2017 RSC Emergency Operations Centre (ESOC) was activated. ESOC group’s representatives assess the information and carries out prognosis of the event. In a case of emergency in NPP due to earthquake, release of radionuclides into the environment can occur. RSC is prepared, within limits of competence, to cooperate with concerned institutions and provide recommendations to the public.

    During the exercise EU Integrated Political Crisis Response arrangements, EU Civil Protection Mechanism and Consular Service System has been activated. Lithuania has activated State Emergency Operations Centre; FRD is responsible for its activation.
